The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a law passed in U.S.A., in 1998, which criminalises production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services that are intended to circumvent measures which control access to copyrighted works. This law extends the reach of copyright related laws into the digital world and gives creators of copyrighted materials a measure of protection.
The DMCA has three main parts: anti-circumvention provisions, online service provider provisions, and internet protocol address (IP) provisions. The anti-circumvention provisions stipulate that it is illegal to produce or distribute technology, products, services, or devices that enable piracy or other forms of copyright violation, such as unauthorised reproductions or distributions of copyright material over the internet or through peer-to-peer networks. These provisions also provide a measure of protection for creators in the digital age, specifically by granting them the right to use technological tools to protect and defend their works from piracy and other forms of illegal distribution.
The online service provider provisions are slightly different from the anti-circumvention provisions in that they grant limited liability to website and internet service providers for the copyright infringement of their users.
